Mondays @ The Montalbán

By Kim Sudhalter

June 10, 2014

If you’re like me, you were first introduced to actor Ricardo Montalbán as the delightful host of a very strange tropical isle where all dreams come true…sometimes at a very high price! Each week, you’d tune in to hear him say, in mellifluous tones, “My dear guests, I am Mr. Roarke, your host. Welcome to Fantasy Island.” And then the fun would begin.

Unknown to most, Mr. Montalban had an illustrious career long before the series debuted in 1978. After arriving in Hollywood in the early 1940’s, he had roles in a wide variety of films and was one of only a few working Hispanic actors in Hollywood. In 1970, he formed the Nosotros (“We”) Foundation to advocate for Latinos in the movie and TV industry. The organization bought the historic Doolittle Theatre at 1615 North Vine Street and in 2004 the renamed Montalbán Theatre became a place for young people, most particularly Hispanic, to learn about the craft of acting.

The Montalbán is kicking off Mondays @ The Montalbán, a new series of summer activities for all ages on June 9th. If classic movies are your passion, then you can enjoy summer-long Monday night screenings in the theatre. The first of June’s screenings, all featuring Mr. Montalbán, will be MGM’s 1948 “On An Island with You.” Succeeding Mondays in July and August will feature other classic films along with a variety of entertainment ranging from stand-up comedy to events for the entire family. Suggested donation: $15. June’s schedule:

  • June 9: “On An Island With You” with Esther Williams, Peter Lawford, Jimmy Durante, and Cyd Charisse. 1948
  • June 16:”Fiesta” with Esther Williams, Cyd Charisse and Mary Astor. 1947.
  • June 23: “Right Cross” with June Allyson, Dick Powell, and Lionel Barrymore. 1950.
  • June 30: “Border Incident” with George Murphy, Howard Da Silva, James Mitchell. 1949.

Or if you’d prefer something a little more active, you can check out The Montalbán’s Summer Rooftop Dance Series. Celebrity choreographer Benjamin Allen, founder of GROOV3, brings his high-octane, choreographed dance party work-out for all levels to the rooftop court of The Montalbán every Monday night all summer long. Tickets are $15 each or check out the group/monthly rates.
