Today: Hollywood Hosts “Biggest Movie Premiere Ever”
December 14, 2015
The world premiere of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will take place today at three theatres on Hollywood Boulevard simultaneously. The TCL Chinese Theatre (where the original “Star Wars” movie had it’s premiere back in 1977); El Capitan Theatre; and The Dolby Theatre will all host the event, with Hollywood Boulevard and several side streets being completely closed for the occasion.
According to Curbed LA, security for the premiere is “very intense.”
As pointed out in various news articles, including this one from LAist, this premiere is “bigger than the Oscars,” which closes down one block of Hollywood Blvd., versus the four blocks necessitated by the Star Wars premiere. A tent has been built that stretches from Hollywood and Highland all the way west to LaBrea. Additional security and LAPD officers are deployed throughout the neighborhood, and pedestrians in the vicinity are subject to metal detectors and searches.
While the premiere will keep Hollywood Boulevard closed until 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, the street will remain closed for two more movie premieres, “Point Break” and “The Revenant.” It will reopen at 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, December 16.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” officially opens on Thursday, December 17.
